Badanloch Bogs We still have a plentiful supply of brown trout in our Highland lochs and rivers, but it is important to remember that this supply may not last forever. To ensure the future of wild angling, a future must be ensured for the species. We as anglers can help secure that future by following a few simple guidelines.

  • Please use flies whenever possible as this method of fishing inflicts the least physical damage to the trout.
  • Carefully return all fish under 10 inches to the water unless you are advised otherwise by the permit issuer.
  • Consider using barbless hooks.
  • Do not keep any more trout than you can use for the table.
  • Wet your hands prior to picking up any trout which you intend to return to the water. (This way you will not damage its protective mucus coating.)
  • Any 'bag limits' on waters are imposed to conserve fish stocks so please obey them on lochs where they apply.
  • In order to prevent unnecessary suffering, fish which are damaged should be retained.
  • Please do not fish by any illegal method.
The bogs and lochs of Caithness and Sutherland are important breeding habits for a range of birds - please see Peatland Birds and their Importance for details of how you can help birds in our area.
